Madugalle clears doubts about Mallender's absence

BANGALORE NOV. 12. Mr. Ranjan Madugalle, ICC Match Referee for the ongoing tri-series, had been contacted to enquire about the change in one of the umpires officiating for the Bangalore day/night match. Initially there was some wild guessing in some quarters as to why Neil Mallender was not umpiring. This included possibilities such as "poor decisions" being the reason why Mallender had been replaced by David Shepherd for this match.

As the State umpires had no information and the fact that all changes in the ICC Emirates Panel schedules were directly under the ICC control, any information regarding the revised schedule had to be forthcoming from its representatives, sources at the KSCA Umpires panel said. Some publications here (going by the schedule earlier released) had reported that Mr. Mallender would be standing in the game. Mr Madugalle therefore cleared the doubts. "Neil took very ill after the Cuttack game and had to be flown to England immediately. He developed high fever and had a bad case of acute dysentry. He has been advised two weeks rest and will therefore be unable to officiate in Pakistan also," the former Sri Lankan cricketer said. "I hope that clears all speculations," Mr. Madugalle added.
