Fond farewell to Srinath

By K.C. Vijaya Kumar

Bangalore Nov. 12. A wave of the hand, a few words in English and Kannada... and Javagal Srinath was gone. It was typical of the man. Understated and low profile.

The early dinner break at the Chinnaswamy Stadium here on Wednesday, witnessed a hurriedly organised ceremony that had solemn undertones. The BCCI, Srinath's home association — the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) — and his teammates, led by Sourav Ganguly, paid tributes to the genial fast bowler from Mysore who had announced his retirement here on Tuesday.

Mementoes were presented to Srinath by the BCCI president, Jagmohan Dalmiya, the KSCA president, K.M. Ramprasad, and captain Sourav Ganguly, while the BCCI secretary, S.K. Nair, the KSCA secretary, Brijesh Patel, and the Indian team applauded.

Srinath said, "it was an honour to represent the country. I thank my teammates, the Board, KSCA, my family and fans. I cherish the memories of my playing days.''

Srinath shook hands with the officials and his mates, was lost briefly in a bear hug from Harbhajan Singh and later as he walked away with the mementoes, his State mates Rahul Dravid, Anil Kumble and Venkatesh Prasad escorted him past the ropes while a capacity crowd gave a standing ovation.

Soon a roar greeted the emergence of Sachin Tendulkar and Virender Sehwag as the Indian openers walked out to the middle. The game continued while the finest paceman India has produced after Kapil Dev, hung his boots in style at a venue where Sunil Gavaskar bid adieu from Test cricket after a masterful 96 against Pakistan in 1987.
