Brace by Sunil Kujur

NEW DELHI NOV. 12. Two goals by Sunil Kujur powered Town High School, Sundergarh, to a 2-0 victory over Birsa Munda Vidyapith, Rourkela, in the semifinals of the ONGC 21st Nehru sub-junior hockey tournament at the Shivaji Stadium here on Wednesday.

Sunil, capitalising on the favourable flow of the game, put his team ahead in the 16th minute.

The team forced three penalty corners but did not have the expertise for conversion.

Midway through the second half, Anil Kullu put Sunil in possession and the latter cracked a crisp shot to fetch the second goal for his team. He could have got a hat-trick but his shot off the team's fourth penalty corner was well blocked by the goalkeeper, Biswas Xess.

The two Orissa teams seemed to understand each other's game very well, and thus the match did not rise to any great height as a contest.

In the other semifinal, between two Punjab teams, Government Model Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar, recorded a 2-1 triumph over Baba Farid Public School, Faridkot. The teams were locked 1-1 at half-time.

Enjoying a distinct advantage in terms of height and strength, the Jalandhar lads called the shots initially. The team converted its third penalty corner, as Lovepreet Singh found the board with a direct hit, in the 12th minute.

The Faridkot team was also successful in converting its third penalty corner, five minutes before half-time, as Kanwaljeet Singh beat goalkeeper Amandeep Singh with a sharp hit.

Four minutes after resumption, Varun Bhardwaj converted the team's fifth penalty corner, tapping a rebound home, clinching what proved to be the match-winner for the Jalandhar team. The team could have scored more but for the competent manner in which the Faridkot goalkeeper, Gurvinder Singh, blocked the attempts with his glove, especially the drag flick sequences by Lovepreet Singh.

Thursday's matches: Third place: Birsa Munda Vidyapith, Rourkela v Baba Farid Public School, Faridkot (1 p.m.); Final: Town High School, Sundergarh v Government Model Senior Secondary School, Jalandhar (3.15 p.m.).
