7th national meet on e-governance opens today

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI NOV. 12. The seventh national conference on e-governance, opening here tomorrow, is expected to provide a platform for the participating States to look at initiatives taken and seek modifications in their network-enabled models.

The three-day conference has attracted the participation of 25 States, the Minister for Information Technology, D. Jayakumar, said today. A few more States were likely to join.

Addressing presspersons here, he said Tamil Nadu was chosen the venue, taking into consideration the progress made by the State in information technology and IT-enabled services. A total of 350 delegates registered for the meet.

The Tamil Nadu IT secretary, Vivek Harinarain, said the conference would also showcase many self-sustaining initiatives. Computerisation of tax computation for trucks in Gujarat, the RASI initiative in Tamil Nadu and e-Seva in Andhra Pradesh were the most successful models.

P.I.Suvrathan, Additional Secretary, Department of Administrative Reforms and Public Grievances, Government of India, said the Prime Minister approved an e-governance action plan, which would be unveiled shortly and would include the best practices from all States.

The conference was being organised by the DARPG in coordination with the Tamil Nadu IT department. The objective was to analyse and address issues of implementing e-governance.

Four regional conferences were held in Bangalore, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Thiruvananthapuram.

The regional conferences helped the States to identify key areas of discussion during the national conference, Mr.Narain said.

The proceedings of the conferences would be presented at the conference, which will be inaugurated by the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani. The Chief Minister, Jayalalithaa, will participate.
