Govt. awaiting concessions to start work on airport

Bangalore Nov. 12. The Minister of State for Infrastructure and Civil Aviation, T. John, said today that the State Government would provide a `subordinate debt' of Rs. 350 crore to the consortium which had been entrusted with the construction of the international airport at Devanahalli to avoid delay in starting the project.

Addressing presspersons, he said discussions had been held with the Union Government for certain concessions, and these were likely to be given at the earliest. Construction of the Rs. 1,500-crore airport would begin after they were granted. Mr. John said the Government planned to ask the Union Government to sanction landing facility for non-military aircraft at the Seabird Naval Base at Karwar. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, had been briefed about the requirement, and he was likely to agree to the proposal.

Mr. John said that the runway at the Hubli airport had been widened. Deccan Aviation had started operations. Land acquisition for an airbase in Mysore was on. The airbase, which already had 200 acres of land, required an additional 150 acres, he added.

The Jakkur Flying School near Hebbal, which had not functioned for the past three years because of the non-availability of flying instructors, would reopen. The school now had five instructors and pilots.

To a question, he said the Chief Minister, S.M. Krishna, in response to the issue of lack of infrastructure in, Bangalore raised by Wipro Chairman, Azim Premji, had asked the Bangalore Agenda Task Force to look into it.
