Japanese aid sought for Hussain Sagar

By Our Staff Reporter

HYDERABAD NOV. 12. The Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (HUDA) has sought soft loans to the tune of Rs. 250 crores from Japanese banks for restoration and management of Hussain Sagar lake.

Participating in `Public Consultation Workshop on Hussain Sagar Lake Development' here on Wednesday, the HUDA chairperson, Lakshmi Parthasarathy, said the loan was sought for restoring the lake to its past glory including ecological, economical and cultural aspects by appropriate technological interventions.

The HUDA proposal aims at improving the lake water quality by preventing all kinds of pollutants from entering the lake besides removal of nutrient-rich sediments. The major sources identified as polluting the lake include untreated sewage, nutrient-rich sediments accumulated in the lake bed, sewage entering directly from nearby slum areas, cattle and vehicle washing, dumping of domestic solid waste and large scale idol immersion.

The restoration measures proposed by the HUDA include setting up of two Tertiary Treatment Plants (TTP), upgrading the existing secondary STP at M.S.Maktha and preventive measures to stop illicit discharges.

Mrs. Parthasarathy suggested dredging and desilting to increase the water holding capacity of the lake and developing a new aesthetic shoreline with the dredged material along the road from Sanjeevaiah Park to Nest Hotel.

The public consultation organised by the HUDA and Buddha Poornima Project Authority (BPPA) was attended by representatives of various Government organisations, voluntary bodies and lake user communities.

The participants who were divided into three different groups presented their recommendations on use of dredged sediment as embankments, allowing shores for recreational purposes, separate enclosure for idol immersion, deterrent mechanism against those polluting the lake and setting up a group of volunteers to police the Necklace Road.

Other suggestions include asking citizens to contribute Re.1 each for lake conservation, holding an annual `Hussain Sagar Festival' and setting up a group of activists called `Friends of Hussain Sagar'.
