Project to improve sewage treatment

Pondicherry Nov. 13. A Rs.5-crore project has been evolved by the Public Works Department of the Pondicherry Administration for introducing modern techniques to improve the sewage treatment.

An official press release said here on Wednesday that the underground drainage scheme was being implemented in a phased manner in the Union Territory. The scheme was first brought into effect in 1980 within boulevard areas.

The entire urban area of Pondicherry was divided into six divisions or zones as had been done for supply of drinking water for the sewerage scheme. The PWD had covered in phase one the boulevard limits spread over an area of 203 hectares spending Rs 2.2 crores in 1980.

The underground drainage system was extended in the next phase to cover Muthialpet area in 1997 covering a gross location of 217 hectares and as much as Rs 2.2 crores was spent for the scheme.

Intensive steps were subsequently taken to extend the scheme to cover the other zones and Vambakeerapalayam and its neighbouring pockets were covered under the next phase of sewerage scheme.

A sum of Rs 3.8 crores was spent during this year to cover Venkata Nagar, Rainbow Nagar, Kamaraj Nagar, Tiruvalluvar Nagar, Ezhil Nagar and Sooriya Gandhi nagar.

The source said that very soon Lawspet, Thattanchavady and Mudaliarpet segments would be covered under the scheme.

The government would soon introduce new techniques to improve the process of treatment. Fish farming and recharging the ground water resources would also be adopted making use of the effluent treated by this process and in a year's time this innovative system of treatment and recycling technology would be enforced.
