National Book Festival to begin tomorrow

THRISSUR NOV.15. Exhibitions on various themes, seminars, invited talks, film screenings, theatre productions, folk performances and a host of other cultural events will form part of the National Book Festival that will be organised here by the Kerala Sahithya Akademi between November 17 and 24.

Fifty leading publishers from across the country are expected to take part in the festival, office bearers of the books festival organising committee and the Akademi said in a press conference here today. Several leading cultural and political personalities including the noted jurist V.R. Krishna Iyer, the social critic, Sukumar Azhikkode, the renowned Tamil short story writer Asoka Mithran, the veteran leader of the Communist Party of India, P.K. Vasudevan Nair, the CPI (M) ideologue P. Govinda Pillai, the Indian Newspaper Society President and chairman of the Press Trust of India, M.P. Veerendrakumar, the noted poet, K.G. Sankarappillai and the writer M.N. Vijayan would participate in the various programmes arranged in connection with the book festival. One of the exhibitions arranged will provide an overview of Malayalam literary history and another will strive to familiarise visitors with the heritage of Kerala through the folk artefacts.

There will also be an exhibition of paintings along with the festival. While Dr. Azhikkode will inaugurate the Malayalam literary history exhibition, M.V. Devan will inaugurate the painting exhibition. The book `Contours of Kerala Cultural History Through Coins' authored by P. Gopakumar will be released at the function.

The visitors to the book festival will also have an opportunity to listen to the speeches of the renowned socio-cultural personalities of the yesteryears of Kerala and to see their portraits, handwritings, the writing tools and other articles used by those great personalities.
