Fernandes asks militants to join mainstream

Imphal Nov. 15. The Defence Minister, George Fernandes, today condemned the recent kidnapping and subsequent killing of the eight-year-old daughter of the Manipur General Administration Minister and appealed to the militants in the State to stop kidnapping for ransom and join the mainstream.

``My appeal is, don't kidnap children for money. We have plenty of money. Militants should lay down arms, join the national mainstream and earn money by participating in development work,'' he told the media during a chat here after addressing NCC cadets.

Lungnila Elizabeth was kidnapped for ransom on November 4 and her body was found in a sack near her school on November 12. Mr. Fernandes also reviewed the counter-insurgency operations in Manipur with the army officials here. — PTI
