The Chairman of the organising committee, M. Mohan Alva, in an appeal at the meeting, said that though funds were hard to come by, arrangements for the sammelan were going on in full swing. Mr. Alva said arrangements for food, exhibition, and printing publicity material would have to be made before the end of this month. He estimated that about Rs. 1.2 crore would be required for organising the sammelan this year. A sum of Rs. 1.30 crore was spent on the last sammelan in Belgaum, he said. He appealed to the Minister in charge of the district, B. Ramanath Rai, who is overseeing the preparations, to urge officials, taluk panchayat members, zilla panchayat members, MLAs, and others to contribute one day's salary to the organising committee. Replying to the appeal, Mr. Rai, who presided over the meeting, said he would spare no effort to make the sammelan a success. He said the Government had already released Rs. 20 lakh towards the fund, and he had directed the Dakshina Kannada Zilla Panchayat to double its contribution from Rs. 15,000. He had also asked the executive officers of taluk panchayats to issue a circular to mobilise funds from taluk and gram panchayats.
