ST status: MP apologises to Valmiki leaders

By Our Staff Reporter

KURNOOL Nov. 15. The Kurnool MP, K.E. Krishna Murthy, has apologised to leaders of Valmikis (Boyas), who felt hurt by the TDP leaders being non-committal about granting of ST status to the community.

Addressing a press conference here on Friday, the MP said he and others had organised a meeting with the Chief Minister to discuss the problem of ST status to Valmikis. The delegates were scheduled to meet the Chief Minister on November 13 but the unexpected political developments had eclipsed the meeting.

He said the Chief Minister had expressed his inability to move the subject at the Cabinet meeting yesterday or in the Assembly immediately. He promised to take up the subject prominently after the election. When the Chief Minister explained to the delegates the technicalities, some of the people from the crowd had raised slogans against the Government. The MP said he had requested the delegates not to create a scene at the residence of the Chief Minister in an uncivilised fashion. The MP said the TDP was committed to solve the problem of Valmikis after the election, as the party was hopeful of winning the election. The party was aware of the issue of Valmikis who enjoyed ST status all over the country except in parts of Andhra Pradesh. Even in AP, the community was identified as ST in coastal Andhra. Because of the anomaly, problems had cropped up when marital alliances were proposed between families of the community in AP and Karnataka.

Mr. Krishna Murthy said he would throw his weight behind the community to solve the problem and was even ready to make sacrifices for the cause. Mr. Krishna Murthy said the TDP was fully prepared to face the snap poll with all candidates. The Congress was groping in the dark and was unable to find suitable candidates.

Asked about his plan to contest from Dhone assembly seat, Mr. Krishna Murthy he would confine himself to Parliament elections. He said the development of the district would only be the main plank of the party in the next elections.
