Thrissur panchayat to launch drive against stray dogs

By Our Staff Reporter

THRISSUR NOV. 15. In a laudable initiative, the Thrissur district panchayat has earmarked Rs. 7.5 lakhs for launching a multi-faceted scheme against the growing stray dog menace and rabies infection in the district.

The panchayat secretary, K.P. Preman, said here that the panchayat meeting held on Thursday had approved this scheme and it would be implemented soon. The first part of the scheme would focus on creating awareness among the people on the steps to be taken to contain the stray dog menace and to prevent the rabies infection.

Awareness classes to be conducted in all the 92 panchayats in the district would also strive to persuade the local bodies to set up scientific waste disposal system for slaughter houses and other similar institutions.

The unscientific dumping of slaughter house wastes and other wastes had been recognised as major cause for the growth of stray dogs, Mr. Preman said.

Ensuring adequate supply of anti-rabies vaccines and other medicines in the district would be the second component of the anti-rabies campaign of the panchayat.

The district panchayat would be in a position to provide the finance for the vaccine and medicines wherever they were in short supply, Mr. Preman said.

Launching a training programme for live dog-catching would be the third component of the campaign. This training to be conducted in collaboration with the Animal Welfare Board, Blue Cross Society and Indian Veterinary Association would be of great help in the reduction of stray dog population, he said. Shortage of personnel trained in this area had been a major handicap in undertaking any programme for sterilising such stray dogs.

Mr. Preman said the panchayat would have no constraints in allocating more funds for the programme.
