Jamaat chief's call to oppose UDF criticised

By Our Staff Reporter

PATHANAMTHITTA Nov. 15. The Kerala Muslim Jamaat Council district chairman, T. A. Majid, and its State working committee member, K. E. Abdul Rahman, have alleged that neither the district committee nor the State committee of the Jamaat Council had decided to oppose the UDF in the coming Assembly by-election in Thiruvalla.

The Jamaat leaders were addressing a press conference in Thiruvalla to protest against the recent statement of K. A. Hassan, the Jamaat Council State president, that the council had decided not to support the UDF in Thiruvalla.

Mr. Abdul Rahman, who is also the district president of the Indian Union Muslim League, said that the Jamaat Council was an apolitical religious organisation and hence its State president's statement was against its basic principles and motto.

Mr. Rahman said that there was every reason to suspect a `leftist move' behind the statements of the Jamaat State president with a hidden motive to `topple' the democratically elected Antony Government.

C. A. Shamsuddin, the president of the Paipad Muslim Jamaat, said the council had never taken any such decision and Mr. Hassan's statement was baseless.

The Jamaat leaders alleged that the CPI(M) was behind the `baseless' statements by Mr. Hassan and a section of the council leaders in Thiruvalla the other day.
