Lokayukta pulls up pharmacist

By Our Special Correspondent

GULBARGA Nov. 15. The Lokayukta, Justice N. Venkatachala, on Saturday directed the State Government to suspend a pharmacist and an attender attached to the primary health centre (PHC) at Kadaganchi village in Aland taluk in Gulbarga district for allegedly sub-letting their official quarters.

The Lokayukta, accompanied by senior officials of the district, paid a surprise visit to the Kadaganchi PHC and found that the pharmacist, Raghavendra, and the attender, Suryakant, had sub-let the quarters allotted to them. Mr. Justice Venkatachala told the Health Department officials to take steps to get the quarters vacated and take it into their possession immediately.

On complaints from people that there was no supply of anti-rabies vaccine to the PHC, the Lokayukta wondered why it was not being supplied to the PHC when the vaccine was available at the District Health Office. He directed the Health Department officials to take steps to supply the vaccine to all the PHCs in the district. He also asked them to ensure regular supply of anti-venom drugs to the PHC to treat snakebites.

Mr. Justice Venkatachala, who visited the taluk hospital in Aland, told the officials concerned to take immediate steps to install dental chairs and other equipment to provide treatment to patients. At the Tahsildar's office, he told the Revenue Department officials to ascertain facts before rejecting applications seeking old age pension.

The Lokayukta asked the officials accompanying him to seize the files pertaining to the construction of houses under different housing scheme for the poor after he detected a few signed blank stamp papers indicating payments without the name of the beneficiaries. He also directed the Assistant Commissioner, Ramesh Begar, to conduct an inquiry into the issue and take action against the guilty.
