Mumbai dismisses Delhi cheaply

NEW DELHI NOV. 15. Mumbai squeezed out Delhi on a placid wicket in the Ranji Trophy Elite `A' group, at the Jamia Millia Islamia Ground here on Saturday. Mumbai skipper Sairaj Bahutule, showing no signs of missing his main strike bowler, Avishkar Salvi - away on the National duty, played a major role in dismissing Delhi for 199 in the first innings. In reply, Mumbai was 15 without loss in six overs after the play was stopped three overs before the scheduled close due to poor light.

Bahutule, who took five wickets for 45 runs, inched closer to the 400-wicket mark with his 17th five-wicket haul in his his first class career. Bahutule now has 396 wickets.

Mumbai revelled under mainly overcast conditions, mostly applying spin to guard any exuberance from the Delhi batsmen. Opener Gautam Gambhir (96) was the lone fighter for Delhi, scoring almost half the team's score.

Akash Chopra opened with Gambhir after their skipper Mithun Manhas won the toss, but Mumbai bowlers hardly gave any room for him to settle. Left-arm orthodox spinner Nilesh Kulkarni gave Mumbai the breakthrough in the eighth over when Chopra nicked the ball behind to wicketkeeper Vinayak Samant.

An early wicket frustrated Delhi's plans as the new man Salil Oberoi geared himself into over-defensive mode. He scored just nine runs off 77 balls but on the other end Gambhir kept the scoreboard ticking. The two added 73 runs for the second wicket before pace sensation Munaf Patel castled Oberoi's stumps.

Manhas and Ajay Jadeja paid brief visit to the ground, scoring identical 12 runs each. In between, Bahutule removed Gambhir when Kulkarni snapped the Delhi batsman at the square leg. Gambhir scored 96 runs off 115 balls and hit 11 fours and a six.

Middle order batsman Rajat Bhatia (27) was the second-highest scorer, taking Delhi to the tea break at 181 for six. But on resumption they played as if all was lost. Two boundaries by Sarandeep Singh (11) and one by Nehra were just to respond to the demanding crowd.

The tail folded without much resistance as Kulkarni (four for 62) and Bahutule called the shots. Mumbai `keeper Samant was also busy throughout the day taking four catches and effecting one stumping.

The scores: Delhi 199 in 79 overs (Gautam Gambhir 96, Nilesh Kulkarni four for 62, Sairaj Bahutule five for 45) v Mumbai 15 for no loss in six overs. — Our Sports Reporter
