Ananthapadmanabhan checks Railways

PALAKKAD NOV. 15. Kerala cricket's wily old fox, legspinner K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan took four wickets as the Ranji Trophy Elite Group `A' cricket match against Railways turned sharply in the host's favour on the opening day at the Kota Maidan here on Saturday.

After returning empty-handed from its opener against Punjab, Kerala tried out a new wicket today for it desperately needed a few points from its second home match here. And Ananthapadmanabhan, the 34-year-old IOB Officer, promised to bring the team these with a fine haul in a 27-minute stunning spell this afternoon.

For Railways, marching merrily at 138 for one by the 41st over, finished the day at a disappointing 243 for eight.

After being brought in late in the day, in the 51st over, the seasoned Ananthapadmanabhan did not waste much time as he dismissed Sanjay Bangar and Sidharth Varma, Railways' two big scorers in its opener against Andhra in Delhi early this week, and Yere Goud and J.P.Yadav.

"There was not much turn in the wicket but there was good bounce from some spots,'' said Ananthapadmanabhan, who was playing his 79th Ranji match. Ajay Kudua, with three good catches from close range and a smart throw which ran out captain Abhay Sharma, also had a memorable day.

With openers Sanjay Bangar (45 off 154 balls, 8x4) and Amit Pagnis (42, 88 balls, 8x4) putting on an 80-run stand, Railways seemed set for a big total. But after debutant Sony Cheruvathur dismissed Pagnis, left-arm spinner M.Suresh Kumar saw off the hard-hitting Tejinderpal Singh, who offered one to Sreekumar Nair at long-off.

With two of his team-mates making their exit in the forties, Sanjay Bangar, slow and steady, appeared to be heading for a big innings before he edged a catch to Ajay Kudua at forward short leg off Ananthapadmanabhan. Within the next 11 overs, Railways had lost the next four wickets for the addition of just 14 runs with Ananthapadmanabhan being the chief assassin.

But towards the end of the day, the home boys appeared to relax a bit. And Shreyesh Khanalkar (42 batting) and Harvinder Singh (23) put on a 49-run stand for the eighth wicket which offered Railway some respite. K. Parida and Khanalkar were at the crease at close. Kerala medium-pacer Sony Cheruvathur finished the day with two wickets.

Brief scores: Railways 243 for eight in 90 overs (Sanjay Bangar 45, Amit Pagnis 42, Tejinderpal Singh 40, Shreyesh Khanalkar batting 42, K.N. Ananthapadmanabhan four for 34) v Kerala. - Our Sports Reporter
