Cricket
The openers slammed half centuries and their unfinished 126-run partnership had a few sunny moments after overnight rains and the resultant damp spots on the pitch and the outfield led to a delayed start at 2 p.m. Karnataka opted to bat and with the Bengal seam attack led by Shabbir Ali and Shiv Shankar Paul bowling an erratic line, the openers' were hardly tested. Arun (50 n.o., 145b, 9x4) after a tentative start, blossomed against the spinners with a few drives that scorched the carpet. Utpal Chatterjee, despite a nagging line, was twice punished past the long off ropes. However at the other end, Barrington mixed defence with the odd shot played away from the body and one such effort nearly had him walking to the pavilion but Nikhil Haldipur grassed the snick off Shabbir Ali. Barrington, then on nine, grabbed the lifeline compiled a good 50 (57 n.o., 144b, 4x4). The duo's runs gathered pace and poise in the last hour before bad light curtailed play. Earlier, mopping operations combined with the odd petrol flame on the damp spots near the center square helped the game commence in the post-lunch session. Brief scores: Karnataka 126 for no loss in 46 overs (Barrington Rowland 57 n.o., J. Arun Kumar 50 n.o.) vs Bengal.
