No to Animal symbols

By Our Staff Reporter

NEW DELHI NOV. 15. Though banned by the Election Commission for quite some time at the request of animal rights activists, this would be the first time that animals would not be allotted as symbols to candidates in the upcoming Delhi Assembly elections.

Referring to an order issued by the Commission in this regard, officials said all animal and bird symbols have been deleted from the list of free election symbols following a protest by animal rights activists. "This is because animals and birds were paraded by the candidates and political parties during campaigning,'' officials said. However, "elephant'' of the Bahujan Samaj Party and "lion'' of the All India Forward Bloc would continue to be used as symbols in Delhi as these were allocated much before the order was issued. While the BSP is a national party, the All India Forward Bloc is a State party from West Bengal.
