Retaliatory attacks on Biharis

Guwahati Nov. 15. Five persons from Bihar were injured, three hutments torched and railway property at Tinsukia was damaged in separate incidents of violence apparently in retaliation to the attacks on Assamese train passengers in Bihar in the last few days.

(Several Assamese passengers were assaulted in the past few days by students in Katihar, Jamalpur and Kishangunj stations of Bihar for allegedly preventing Bihari students from appearing in a railway recruitment test at Maligaon in Assam on November 9.)

The City Superintendent of Police, Hiren Nath, said unidentified people attacked a group of students from Bihar this morning in the Guwahati railway station.

In the scuffle, two were injured but they were not from among the students, Mr. Nath said. Three huts on the hills near Gauhati University were set ablaze but none was injured last night, he said.

Some roadside shops near the Nehru Stadium here were attacked yesterday and three persons received minor injuries.

Some agitated youths also damaged railway property at Tinsukia yesterday, official sources said.

ULFA's ultimatum

The ULFA has asked all Hindi-speaking people to ``leave Assam immediately.'' The outfit's self-styled commander-in-chief, Paresh Baruah, in a statement to the local media here, has warned that the proscribed outfit was planning a ``large-scale retaliation.''

Another militant outfit National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) has also condemned the attacks and called for an immediate halt to such actions.

In a joint statement to the local media here yesterday, the ULFA and the NDFB have warned of consequences that would have ``far reaching repercussions'' throughout the region if innocent passengers continued to be attacked in Bihar. Both the Bihar Government and the Central Government would be responsible for such repercussions, he warned. — PTI
