The Deputy Commissioner, Anjum Parvez, who chaired the special election meeting, declared the two elected as no other candidate had filed nominations for both the posts. Ms. Digambar, aged 36, was elected from the Chinchansur constituency in Aland taluk. Mr. Anakur, aged 44, was elected from the Konkal constituency in Yadgir taluk. The post of President was reserved for a Scheduled Caste (woman) candidate that of the Vice-President post for a Backward Class (B) candidate.
Smooth sailing
Our Udupi Staff Correspondent writes: U. Vanajakshi and H. Prasanna Ballal of the Congress party were elected unopposed as President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Udupi Zilla Panchayat here today. The Deputy Commissioner, S.R. Umashankar, announced the results. The Udupi Zilla Panchayat has 24 seats and all of them are held by the Congress, making the elections a smooth affair. The post of President was reserved for a Schedule Caste (woman) candidate, and that of Vice-President for the general category. Ms. Vanajakshi is the only Scheduled Caste woman in the panchayat and her election was a foregone conclusion.
Bangalore Urban ZP
Our Bangalore Staff Reporter writes: Ravikumar and C. Chinnamma were elected unopposed as President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Bangalore Urban Zilla Panchayat on Friday. Mr. Ravikumar is a Scheduled Caste member and represents Singanayakanahalli. Ms. Chinnamma, who is from the Backward Class `A' category, was elected from Uttarahalli. Our Chikmagalur Correspondent writes: H.M. Satish and N.S. Chandrappa of the Congress were elected unopposed as President and Vice-President, respectively, of the Chikmagalur Zilla Panchayat today. After intense lobbying throughout the day, it was decided to split the last 20-month period of the term of the panchayat into three. Mr. Satish and Mr. Chandrappa will be in office for the first six months. They will be succeeded by K. Mohammed and K. Rajamma, and H. Vishwanath and Pushpa Lakshminarayana for two terms of seven months each.
