Ruina to meet Chen in final

SHANGHAI Nov. 16. Top seed Gong Ruina battled her way into the final of the $250,000 China Open badminton championships in Guangzhou, vanquishing Hong Kong's Wang Chen 3-11, 13-10, 11-5 on Saturday.

Gong next faces compatriot Zhou Mi. Zhou easily defeated China's Xie Xingfang, 11-2, 11-7 in their semifinal.

In women's doubles play, China's top seeded Yang Wei and Zhang Jiewen downed Hwang Yu-mi and Lee Hyo-jung of South Korea, 17-14, 15-4, to set up a showdown with fellow Chinese Gao Ling and Huang Sui, who came from behind to defeat China's Wei Yili and Zhao Tingting, 6-15, 15-1, 15-2.

The results: Women's singles (semifinals): Gong Ruina bt Wang Chen 3-11, 13-10, 11-5; Zhou Mi bt Xie Xingfang 11-2, 11-7.

Women's doubles (semifinals): Yang Wei & Zhang Jiewen bt Hwang Yu-mi & Lee Hyo-jung 17-14, 15-4; Gao Ling & Huang Sui bt Wei Yili & Zhao Tingting 6-15, 15-1, 15-2.

Men's doubles (semifinals): Lars Paaske & Jonas Rasmussen bt Fu Haifeng & Cai Yun 15-9, 10-15, 15-7; Choong Tan Fook & Lee Wan Wah bt Cheng Rui & Wang Wei, 15-1, 15-10.

Mixed doubles (final): Zhang Jun & Gao Ling bt Chen Qiqiu & Zhao Tingting 15-13, 15-6.
