Violence against Biharis in Assam continues

Guwahati Nov. 16. Sporadic incidents of violence, including torching of huts and breaking of glass panes of several cars of Biharis, were reported today from different parts of the city in the wake of the attack on Assamese train passengers in Bihar.

Candidates of Assam origin abstained from the second phase of railway recruitment test in Bihar while things were normal for the same simultaneously held in Assam today.

Official sources said glass panes of several cars were smashed by some persons in the Fancy Bazar area, where there was a concentration of Hindi-speaking people. In another incident, two huts and two cowsheds belonging to Biharis were torched inside the Guwahati University campus by unidentified people.

Security tightened

Security was tightened in Assam in view of tomorrow's 24-hour bandh called by the All-Assam Students' Union. The call has received support from several organisations, including the Opposition Asom Gana Parishad and All-Bodo Students Union. Additional troops had been deployed in sensitive areas, official sources said.
