The CBI Director, P.C. Sharma, told The Hindu tonight that the agency was ready to probe the scam if the case was entrusted to it fully but added that the CBI was going ahead with its probe in Gujarat, Delhi and Andhra Pradesh where several leads had been found. The scam is reportedly spread over a dozen States, including Maharashtra. In Gujarat, Mr. Sharma said, the CBI had made a couple of arrests and made recoveries to the tune of Rs. nine crores. Further investigation was on in Delhi and Andhra Pradesh and if need be the agency would take custody of Telgi from the Karnataka police for interrogation. For taking over all the cases relating to the stamp paper racket, the CBI would need a notification by the Centre. Mr. Sharma said the agency was also looking into alleged security lapses at the Security Press, Nasik.
