Reacting to the report in an English daily, the Congress also demanded that the evidence in the case be secured. Briefing presspersons at a specially-convened press conference, the AICC general secretary, Ambika Soni, said the law of the land should be applied uniformly be it a common man or a Minister. "We hope that the Bharatiya Janata Party-led Government at the Centre will at least this time act since the people of the country are concerned about corruption,'' Ms. Soni said, adding that the response of the Government to the tehelka.com tapes expose was still fresh in the mind. Emphasising three demands, the Congress rejected the BJP's charge of a `conspiracy' behind the allegation against Mr. Judev. Ms. Soni dubbed the BJP's reaction as "diversionary tactics''. She said had the Central Government acted tough after the tehelka.com expose, no one would have dared to indulge in such acts. Asked whether the Congress would accept a probe by the Central Bureau of Investigation into it, Ms. Soni said the decision was for the Central Government to take. The Communist Party of India too demanded the dismissal of Mr. Judev from the Union Council of Ministers.
