dated November 18, 1953: Sad Exploitation

Editorial: Prime Minister, Mr. Nehru has referred to the growing tendency of Colonial Powers to harden their attitude towards territories under imperialist rule. This reverses a tendency towards liberalizing colonial policy which came into prominence at the end of the last World War. The progressive Constitution for British Guiana seems to be in the process of being killed for good. In Kenya, European settlers are preventing any sensible policy of racial cooperation.

The Central African Federation has not got off to a good start. Europeans are objecting even to the very limited representation that has been granted to Africans who are the overwhelming majority of the population. The spread of the theory of the White Man's superiority has become marked.

The rulers of South Africa make no secret of their desire to spread apartheid all over the continent; and have strenuously objected to political advances in the Gold Coast. It would be unfortunate if military requirements, or the discovery of strategic materials like uranium, should tempt any Great Power to assist in strengthening colonialism.
