Cricket
By Mohandas Menon
The Eden Gardens, one of the oldest cricket grounds in the world, has the distinction of being the oldest outside Britain. International cricket began at this ground in January 1934 when England (MCC), led by Douglas Jardine played the second Test match of the series and since then 32 Tests have been hosted here. In February 1987, the stadium hosted its first LOI match against Pakistan. As on date, the venue has seen 17 LOIs with the India-England encounter (won by the former by 22 runs) on 19 January 2002 being last one to played here. As a part of modernisation of the stadium during the 1987 World Cup, where the final match was held, covered stands were built with a modern Club House and pavilion.
The home team has appeared in eleven LOI matches at this venue and has won eight, while Australia have appeared here only once during the 1987 World Cup final when it beat England by 7 runs. The Eden Gardens has hosted six tournament finals. India has been the winners on four occasions Asia Cup (on 4-1-1991, beat Sri Lanka), Hero Cup (27-11-1993, beat West Indies), Wills World Series (5-11-1994, beat West Indies) and Coca Cola Series (31-5-1998, beat Kenya). Australia (World Cup 1987) & Pakistan (Nehru Cup 1989, beat West Indies) have won once each. This means India has not lost a final at this venue.
Ground records:
** Highest team scores: 309 (50 overs) by Sri Lanka v Pakistan, 27-5-1997; Highest for India: 281-8 (50 overs) v England, 19-1-2002. ** Lowest team scores: 123 (40.1 overs) for West Indies v India, 27-11-1993; Lowest for India: 195 (50 overs) v South Africa, 24-11-1993. ** Hundreds (4): 123 by K.
