Chandigarh Club members demand elections

By Rajesh Ahuja

CHANDIGARH NOV.16 .Several members of the prestigious Chandigarh Club here have upped the ante against the management for not conducting the annual general elections for the last over two years. As per the Club rules, the elections should have been conducted in March 2002 and March 2003, a senior member told The Hindu.

According to Sunil Gupta, a chartered accountant and one of the key aspirants for the post of president, the provisions of the Memorandum of Articles of Association of the Club should be followed in letter and spirit and elections should be held immediately along with the annual general body meeting.

Another senior member, close to the interim committee looking after the affairs of the Club after the death of the sitting President, Ravinder Chopra, disclosed that the audit of the Club finances was underway and elections were likely to be conducted by end of January 2004.

Interestingly, while members are peeved over the non-holding of elections and express the desire for a "change of guards so that the running of the Club can be further improved'', several aspirants including Mr.Gupta have already started campaigning sensing that elections are round the corner.

According to old-timers, election time is party time at the Club. And the three main contenders for the presidentship----Amarjit Singh Sethi, Mukesh Bassi and Sunil Gupta----have already started wooing the over 5,500 permanent members by holding small parties at the Club and outside. Interestingly, they put forth their viewpoints regarding improving the services in the dining hall and the bar. While claiming that they would do their utmost to improve the finances, they also hint that the Club activities would be further expanded.

Interestingly, four members of the present Executive Committee----Naresh Chaudhary, Ajay Bir Singh, Priya Bhushan Sharma and Sanjiv Mehan--- want early elections as any further delay beyond February 2004 would debar them from re-contesting the Club elections for the same post for two years.
