PM to kick-start campaign today

By Our Special Correspondent

JAIPUR NOV. 17. The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari Vajpayee, will address two public meetings in Rajasthan tomorrow, marking the formal launch of the Bharatiya Janata Party's election campaign in the State. The party has chosen Bikaner and Udaipur for the Vajpayee rallies in the first round. The Bikaner rally is scheduled to take place at 1 pm while the Udaipur function is scheduled for 4.30 pm.

Simultaneously senior party leaders, the Union Health Minister, Sushma Swaraj, the Union Minister and former Hindi film actor, Vinod Khanna, and former Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister, Shanta Kumar, would address public meetings on the same day in other areas of Rajasthan. Ms.Swaraj will be in the districts of Alwar, Jaipur, Nagaur and Ajmer on the first day of her two-day tour.

Mr.Khanna is to tour the constituencies of Pilibanga, Srikaranpur, Raisingnagar and Sriganganagar in the north Rajasthan territory. Mr.Shanta Kumar is scheduled to be in the Jaipur district constituencies of Bassi, Jamwa Ramgarh and Chomu.

In the second round the Deputy Prime Minister, L.K.Advani, the BJP national president, Venkaiah Naidu, and the Union Minister of State for Home, Swami Chinmayananad, would be addressing various meetings in Rajasthan.

It is interesting to note that the Congress has added Bikaner to the party president, Sonia Gandhi's itinerary on her first round of the State, scheduled for November 20 after the BJP decision on the Vajpayee rally in that divisional headquarter town. Initially Ms.Gandhi had announced plans only to address rallies at the district headquarter towns of Dholpur and Karauli.
