By V.S. Sambandan

COLOMBO Nov. 18. The Sri Lankan President, Chandrika Kumaratunga, and the Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, today appointed a committee of officials to chalk out "future working arrangements'' for the island's two top constitutional leaders on "important national issues''.

The decision was taken at a 90-minute meeting between Ms. Kumaratunga and Mr. Wickremesinghe, at the President's House today. At the meeting, the second since Sri Lanka plunged into a political standoff two weeks ago — "several issues'' on which the two leaders "could work together'' were "discussed in depth'', a joint statement issued by the Secretaries of the President and the Prime Minister said.

"A committee of officials was appointed to work out the details of future working arrangements under which the President and the Prime Minister could work together on these important national issues,'' the statement said.
