Strike of AI ground staff, baggage handlers averted

By Our Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI NOV. 18. The Air India ground staff, security personnel and baggage handlers at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi who had planned to go on strike from today have aborted their move following an understanding reached with Indian Airlines employees.

The dispute which went to the Regional Labour Commissioner has been withdrawn in the wake of an understanding between the IA-AI employees at a meeting here today.

The strike call was given in response to the Government's decision to have a single security agency at the airport — in this case the Indian Airlines — for handling passenger baggage.

The controversy began in September when the Government ordered that Airports Authority of India would be the sole agency to conduct X-rays of check-in baggage at Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Bangalore international airports.
