Race on for CBI chief's post

NEW DELHI NOV. 18. The race for the post of Central Bureau of Investigation Director has begun with the Selection Committee forwarding a panel of senior IPS officers to the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC).

Highly-placed government sources said the names of B.B. Mishra, Special Secretary in the Union Home Ministry, U.S. Mishra, Special Director, CBI, R. Chakravarty, Director-General of Police, Gujarat and S.C. Chaube, Director-General of the Central Reserve Police Force, appear in the list.

The Selection Committee, headed by the Chief Vigilance Commissioner, P. Shankar, has met twice over the past week. The meetings were also attended by the Home Secretary, N. Gopalaswami, and Secretary (Coordination) in the Cabinet Secretariat, S.K.Purkayastha.

While Mr. B.B. Mishra belongs to the 1967 batch of Orissa cadre, Mr. U.S. Mishra is his junior by a year in the same cadre and has been the CBI Special Director for more than a year. In fact, he is the only one from the CBI to have come under the zone of consideration.

Both Mr. Chakravarty and Mr. Chaube have also been considered and rejected two-and-a-half years ago when P.C. Sharma was appointed to head the agency.

As the Supreme Court guidelines for the appointment of the CBI chief stipulate a two-year fixed term irrespective of the date of superannuation of the officer, sources said the Government would like to consider all aspects such as experience in handling anti-corruption work and the track records. The present incumbent, Mr. Sharma, retires on December 4.
