The Congress MLA, Varkala Kahar, who belongs to the Karunakaran group, has dissociated himself from the November 19 rally. In a statement here today, Mr. Kahar, who represents the Varkala Assembly constituency, said that he would not be participating in the rally as he was not in favour of splitting the Congress. He said that he would continue to remain a staunch worker of the Congress and was totally against taking the party into the CPI(M) camp. Mr. Kahar has followed the footsteps of another Karunakaran MLA, P. J. Joy, who too had refused to fall in line with Mr. Karunakaran's moves. The Karunakaran group had claimed the support of 23 MLAs after the Rajya Sabha elections. With this, the number would now come down to 21. In the continuing factional fight, the number would be significant especially if the showdown is to take place in the Assembly where the Karunakaran faction would have to circumvent the Anti-defection law by mustering up the requisite numbers.
