3,500 litres of spirit seized

By Our Staff Reporter

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM Nov. 18. The Parassala police have seized nearly 3,500 litres of spirit while the consignment was being loaded into a boat used for sand-mining near Thekkekollamcode in the wee hours of Tuesday. Tulasi, a resident of Balaramapuram, has been arrested in connection with the seizure.

Police said the seizure was made when the spirit was being unloaded from a lorry bearing Tamil Nadu registration plates. The spirit, which was found in plastic cans of 35-litre capacity, was concealed under bricks.

The Circle Inspector (Neyyatinkara), Rajan John, said that the K.M.K. Canal was being used by spirit smugglers to circumvent scrutiny at the Parassala and police checking on the National Highway. The smugglers used sand-mining boats for the purpose. The KMK Canal joins the Thiruvallam backwaters near the resort area of Poovar, he said.

Arrested

The Peroorkada police have arrested a 38-year-old man on charges of attempting to cheat a motorist by posing as a policeman. The accused was identified as Ajith Kumar of Chuzhampala.
