This Day That Age
From the Editorials: Sir John Kotelawala's Government in Colombo has directed that only the Lion Flag of Ceylon, and only the Ceylonese National Anthem "Namo Namo Matha", should be employed at all State functions. As a fully self-governing member of the British Commonwealth of Nations, Ceylon feels that her dignity and self-respect alike require that only her national flag and her national song would be in order at any State ceremonial or other national occasion. Another step in the right direction taken by the Government is to restrict titles and honours. The Prime Minister has declared that these should be confined to men and women with really sound record of public service and has hinted that he proposes to limit the honours next New Year's Day to public servants. The Government of India have already dispensed with the award of titles and honours (except those awarded for bravery and skill to the members of the Defence forces). The bestowal of honours and favours, and of financial and other rewards, by a Ministry in power can lend itself easily to abuse. It is just as well that these should be limited to the minimum.
