dated November 20, 1953: Vijay Manjrekar Helps India

The first "Test" between India and the Silver Jubilee Overseas Cricket team opened on the 19th morning on the Ferozeshah Kotla ground in New Delhi. India won the toss and batted first. They compiled a sedate score 214 for four wickets at close on a placid wicket. India were helped by a fine innings of 86 by V. L. Manjrekar and a second-wicket stand of 103 runs he put together with M. L. Apte. The five-day contest compelled slow and steady batting as a tactical requirement.
