This Day That Age
A flare-up in the Middle East came with a retaliatory attack by Israeli troops on the Jordanian village of Qibya, killing at least 44 people and injuring others. On the 18th, Britain, France, and United States wanted the United Nations Security Council to express "the strongest censure" to Israel for the attack by its troops. A joint resolution tabled by the three Western Powers asked the Security Council to find that the "retaliatory action" taken at Qibya by the armed forces of Israel constituted a violation of the cease-fire provisions put in place by the Security Council, and inconsistent with the parties' obligations under the general armistice, and the U.N. Charter. The big three wanted the Security Council to express its strongest censure, as such attacks were bound to prejudice chances of a peaceful settlement. Israel was also called upon to take effective measures to prevent such actions in future. The resolution also asked Jordan to strengthen measures to prevent unauthorised crossings of the border into Israel. The resolution asked U.N. Secretary-General Mr. Dag Hammarskjoeld, to consult the United Nations Chief Truce Supervisor, General Beenike, on the best way of strengthening truce supervision.
