We'll shift recruitment office: Railways

By Our Special Correspondent

MUMBAI NOV. 19 . The Railway Ministry has threatened to shift its recruitment office from Mumbai to elsewhere, even outside Maharashtra, if the State Government cannot provide protection to the examination centres.

A Ministry official contacted the Director-General of Police, S.M. Shingare, and the Chief Secretary, Ajit Nimbalkar, today to convey the Railways' concern about Tuesday's attack on the Railway Recruitment Board office by the students' wing of the Shiv Sena in protest against holding exams for candidates from other States.

The Deputy Chief Minister, Chhagan Bhujbal, told presspersons here today that the State Government had assured the Ministry that adequate protection would be provided to the exam centres and urged them not to shift the centres.

Both, Mr. Bhujbal and the Chief Minister, Sushilkumar Shinde, however, felt that local candidates should get preference. Mr. Bhujbal said Maharashtra should get its due share in the vacancies in western India.
