Party workers throw eggs at Orissa PCC chief

By Prafulla Das

BHUBANESWAR NOV. 19. The infighting in the Orissa unit of the Congress came to the open yet again when some party workers hurled rotten eggs and tomatoes at the Pradesh Congress Committee president, Sarat Patnaik, in Puri today.

Mr. Patnaik was in the holy town to launch his Sankalp Yatra after invoking the blessings of Lord Jagannath. However, before the yatra could begin, a group of Congress workers hurled eggs and tomatoes at Mr. Patnaik.

As a result, the Yatra that was supposed to start at 10 a.m. started only at 1 p.m. The former Chief Minister, Nandini Satapathy, former MP Jayanti Patnaik, and several other party leaders were present. Those opposed to Mr. Patnaik's leadership have been demanding his removal from the PCC chief's post. In his attempt to cope with the awkward situation created by the "miscreants," Mr. Patnaik said the attack on him was the handiwork of people belonging to Opposition parties. "No one can prevent me from going ahead with the State-wide yatra to highlight the failures of the Naveen Patnaik Government," he said.

Mr. Patnaik alleged that the Orissa Government had failed to rise to the expectations of the people and influence the Centre to release enough funds for various developmental projects.
