Heavyweights' fate to be decided today

By Barun Das Gupta

Aizawl Nov. 19. Nine out of the 40 constituencies in Mizoram will see key contests between political heavyweights tomorrow. In a five-cornered contest at Champhai, the Chief Minister, Zoramthanga, is pitted against the former Chief Minister and Pradesh Congress Committee chief, Mr. Lalthanhawla. Champhai is Mr. Lalthanhawla's home constituency, while Mr. Zoramthanga successfully fought his first election from here in 1972.

At Lunglei-South, Mr. Lalhmingthanga, former Deputy Chief Minister and working president of the Mizoram People's Conference (MPC), faces a stiff fight from the Congress' C. Lalhminghliana. The Zoram Nationalist Party (ZRM) and the ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) are also in the fray. A former Chief Secretary-turned-politician, Lalkhama, trying his luck in North Vanlaiphai constituency, is pitted against the MNF's D. Thangliana. Their fortunes will depend on how many votes the third candidate, Lalthansanga, is able to poll.

At Kawnpui, the Finance Minister, F. Malsawma faces a stiff challenge from Thangliana of the Congress. The JD(U) and the MPC have also fielded their candidates.

Mr. Zoramthanga is also contesting from Kolasib, where his main opponent is C. Lalbiakthanga of the MPC. The Congress and the JD(U) are also in the fray. The other important contests are at Bilkhawthlir (former Minister, Lalchamliana, versus Ms. Zothankimi, president of the Mahila Congress); Aizawl (West) where another former Chief Secretary, Lalfakzuala, is facing another former bureaucrat, Mr. Malsawmliana; and Aizawal (South I), where the MNF's Home Minister, R. Tlanghmingthanga is being challenged by the former Congress MP, Hiphei.
