Railway sources said the 13 loco running staff were placed under suspension by the divisional authorities after the running of almost all trains in the Thiruvananthapuram railway division had been affected.
The Island Express, the Kerala Express and the Malabar Express were among the long distance trains that were delayed. The 343/344 Ernakulam-Kayamkulam via both Kottayam and Alappuzha stations were cancelled. The 2075 Jan Shatabdi Express from Ernakulam bound to Thiruvananthapuram was also cancelled.
According to the association, over two dozen loco staff, including engine drivers and assistant engine drivers, took sick leave to protest against the move of the Railways to shift the crew depot from Kollam. Two loco staff had already been transferred to Thiruvananthapuram Central.
"The Railways is not ready to provide any facilities to the loco staff such as quarters in Thiruvananthapuram. The shifting of the crew depot will cause hardship to the families. The move is to reduce the loco crew by one-third," sources said.
However, the Divisional Railway Manager, K.K. Srivastava, said the Railways was "managing with the delays". The incident does not have any connection with the shifting of the crew depot and the two staff had been transferred from Kollam on request, he added.
Meanwhile, the Railways has cancellled tomorrow's Jan Shatabdi from Ernakulam and several passenger trains citing operational reasons. The trains cancelled include the 2076 Thiruvananthapuram-Ernakulam Jan Shatabdi Express, 321/324 Alappuzha-Kayankulam passenger on both the directions, the 334 Kayamkulam-Ernakulam Passenger, 355/352 Ernakulam-Kollam Passenger on both the directions, the 345/342 Ernakulam-Kottayam Passenger on both the directions, the 331 Ernakulam-Alappuzha Passenger and the 341 Ernakulam-Kottayam Passenger.
