Dharmapuri bifurcated

By Our Special Correspondent

CHENNAI Nov. 18. Dharmapuri, the biggest district in size in Tamil Nadu, has been bifurcated and a new district with Krishnagiri town as headquarters created. It will be the State's 30th district.

An official release said though the announcement on the bifurcation was made in the 2001-2002 budget speech, it could not be given effect to as a ban on any such change imposed by the Centre's Delimitation Committee existed. But now the State wrote to the Centre and got special permission to give effect to the decision.

The locals had been demanding the division to foster social and economic development of the district and the Chief Minister gave her assent to the move. Now orders were issued for implementing it.

The new Krishnagiri district would have the revenue divisions of Krishnagiri, Uthangkarai, Pochampalli, Hosur and Denganikotta. The revenue divisions of Dharmapuri, Pennagaram, Palacode, Harur and Pappireddipatti would remain with Dharmapuri district.

The Chief Minister also ordered the appointment of a special officer to coordinate the activities of creating the administrative infrastructure for the new district. Dharmapuri district itself was carved out of the erstwhile Salem district in 1965. With the present decision, the two smaller districts would pave way for a more effective administration and economic and social development of the people, the release said.
