Thanks to the software industry, no one asks where India is? Thanks to the telecom policy revolution, mobile phones have become a common man's necessity. This cheer around has not brought smiles on the faces of PC (personal computer) makers. With an effective duty of around 40 per cent, branded PCs just don't figure in the budget of a middle-class family. If at all they desire to have a PC, more often than not, they opt for an assembled one. Surely, the organised PC industry is worried. It has now decided to ask Crisil to make an in-depth study of the PC market. The rating agency will make an independent evaluation of the problems and prospects of the industry and identify solutions as well. Its report may be helpful for the industry to convince the Government of the need for the right kind of policy environment for the PC industry.
