An indispensable surgical procedure

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Nov. 21. Coronary artery bypass surgery without stopping the heart, a technique developed more than a decade ago, has become so commonplace that a majority of heart operations are being performed in many hospitals today with this method.Heart surgeons all over the world recognise its overwhelming advantages over conventional surgery using the heart-lung machine, according to Gopi Chand Mannam, Chief of Cardiothoracic Surgery, CARE Hospital, Banjara Hills.

Addressing a press conference here today, Dr. Gopi Chand said CARE Hospitals had performed 700 beating heart surgeries ever since it adopted this technique in 1996.

He said the degree of difficulty in performing surgery with or without using a lung machine was the same since the segment being operated upon was stable in both cases. However, the blood loss in beating heart surgery was far less and the patient could be discharged from hospital in five days.
