BJP manifesto committee formed

By Our Special Correspondent

HYDERABAD Nov.22. The State BJP leadership has appointed a six-member manifesto committee with the vice-president, S.V. Seshagiri Rao, as its convenor for drafting the promises and programmes on which the party would be seeking votes in the coming Assembly elections.

Releasing the details at a press conference here on Saturday, the State BJP president, N.Indrasena Reddy, said the former MLAs, K.Haribabu, K.Laxman, M.S.Parthasarathi, the State executive committee member, P. Prabhakar and State BJP's general secretary, G.Kishen Reddy, were the other members of the committee. He said the committee had been asked to finalise the draft manifesto by December 20. The draft manifesto would be finalised after a threadbare discussion at the State executive meeting slated for December 27 and State council meeting the next day.

He also appointed six other sub-committees on various subjects, including Agriculture, Irrigation, Environment, Endowments, Education, Power, Economic Issues, Rural Development, Social Welfare, Women's Development, Youth, Urban Development, Minorities, Trade and other issues. Each sub-committee would submit its report to the election manifesto committee for incorporating the issues dealt by it.

Mr.Indrasena Reddy and other BJP leaders, including Prof.Seshagiri Rao, had contended that the elections could not be treated as a referendum on the naxalite issue though it undoubtedly would be main plank of the party. They also rejected the criticism of the Congress(I) and the Left parties for making naxalism the central issue in the coming the elections. They said that the time has come for the people to respond on the issue since a murderous attempt like the one on the Chief Minister, N.Chandrababu Naidu, at Alipiri never took place earlier.

Mr.Reddy appealed to extremists to join the mainstream and propagate their ideology in a democratic manner by contesting the elections. Urging extremists to strengthen democracy in the country, he said violence would only hamper the State's development and cited the examples of Punjab and North-eastern States.

Replying to a question, he said that all aspects relating to seat sharing with the TDP would be finalised after the issue of election notification.

The State BJP general secretary, K.Laxman, who was also present, condemned the allegedly provocative remarks made by Majlis leader Asaddudin Owaisi after the Jumaat-ul-Vida prayers yesterday and wanted the Congress(I) to clarify its stand on them.
