Tamil Nadu-Chennai
By Our Special Correspondent
Within a short span of two years, Chennai achieved a 62 per cent growth in the exports by software companies, with as many as 250 firms choosing the metropolis as their favoured destination. "We practically have a new software company opening their shop in Chennai every third day, " Mr. Harinarain said launching a unified centralised system of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of India-Universe (ICAI-Universe), which enables providing services ultimately at door steps. Pointing out that about Rs.7,000 crores had been mopped up in 2003 against Rs. 3,116 crores in 2001, Mr. Harinarain said while the growth registered in 2001was 11 per cent, it rose to 17 per cent in 2003. Commending the ICAI for its big leap towards e-governance, the IT Secretary cautioned chartered accountants on the "possible misuse" of their e-initiatives and urged them to have inbuilt "security measures". R. Bupathy, president, ICAI, said the institute had made great strides in provision of IT-driven services to its members and students.
