Women empowered in M.P., says Sonia

By Our Staff Correspondent

ITARSI NOV. 22. The Congress president, Sonia Gandhi, today urged the Madhya Pradesh electorate to reject the BJP in the December 1 elections to the Assembly saying it was a "party of self-seekers deeply embroiled in corruption and scams." She cited the example of the BJP leader from Chhattisgarh, Dilip Singh Judeo, allegedly caught accepting bribe on television.

At an election rally here, Ms. Gandhi said the Congress was seeking votes on the basis of the State Government's performance and the party policies. The Chief Minister, Digvijay Singh, had led a stable and strong Government and the State marched ahead in every direction under his regime.

Democracy, she said, had been strengthened in the State through the Panchayati Raj system. The Dalits, adivasis and women had been empowered and their participation in governance ensured.

The State Government had also taken several initiatives in primary education and watershed management spheres. The self-help groups set up in the State would help in making women economically self-sufficient. The party would work for the welfare of the Dalits, tribals, women and weaker sections to ensure social justice.

Admitting that malnutrition was a major problem in the State, she said the problem was being tackled on a priority basis. Also, the Congress would endeavour to create more jobs for the unemployed youth.

Ms. Gandhi said the Centre's "faulty policies" were responsible for the suffering of farmers across the country. While the State Government had done everything in its command to combat the drought situation, the Centre lagged behind in extending assistance.

She said the State was reeling under the impact of a power crisis. This was partly due to the creation of a separate Chhattisgarh State and partly due to the failure on the part of the Centre to fulfil its responsibilities.
