Tree saplings to be planted in catchment areas

By Our Staff Reporter

CHENNAI NOV. 22. In all 15,000 saplings will be planted by Metrowater in the catchment areas of three reservoirs catering for the city supply.

An official release said that during last year's northeast monsoon and this year's southwest monsoon, the three reservoirs - Poondi, Cholavaram and Red Hills - recorded rainfall, which was less than the normal. The Government was of the view that deficient rainfall was due to absence of tree cover in the catchment areas.

The saplings would be purchased from the Forest department and the planting completed in a week.
