Andhra Pradesh-Hyderabad
By R. Ravikanth Reddy
The affected residents include those from Janapriya Abodes apartments, Balaji Indraprashta, Indian Bank flats, Bank of Baroda Colony and a few other areas around. The two dairies - Sattarbagh and Babaiah Dairy - have been doing business in the area for several years now and despite several complaints from residents to the authorities, no concrete action has been initiated. Residents argue that operation of dairy farms in the midst of residential colonies was banned under section 510 and 511 of the Hyderabad Municipal Act 1955. The Act says that dairy cattle or other livestock must be kept in separate premises far away from human dwellings, with necessary facilities required for such trade from time to time, without causing any nuisance or danger to human life. But the situation here is in total contrast. "These dairy farms have become storage places for large quantities of dung and urine of buffaloes. The accumulation of waste water has become a perfect breeding ground for mosquitoes resulting in spreading of dangerous diseases like dengue, diarrhoea and viral fever," says, G. Prem Raj, secretary, Janapriya Abodes Welfare Association. Residents here allege that municipal officials too turn a blind eye despite knowing the facts. Acting on an earlier complaint, the field staff imposed a nominal penalty on Babaiah Dairy while they did not even dare to serve notices to Sattarbagh, where more than 500 buffaloes are reportedly kept. "The Government should act fast and shift these dairies to other places before they cause severe damage," demand the residents.
