Phone bill helped murder investigators

By Our Staff Reporter

BANGALORE NOV. 22. Pieces of a telephone bill gave clues to the police and helped them arrest two of the accused in the Jayamma Reddy murder case. Jayamma Reddy (50), sister of the former Minister of State for Home, Ashwathnarayana Reddy, was found murdered in her house in Koramangala police station limits on November 14.

With the needle of suspicion pointing to carpenters who had worked for Jayamma, a police team went to their shed at Kaigondanahalli on Sarjapur Road, where they found pieces of a telephone bill.

"Putting the pieces together, we could figure out the STD code that had been dialled, but not the number," Umesh, Police Inspector, Tilak Nagar police station, says. The call had been made to Vellore district in Tamil Nadu from a phone booth near the Jayamma's house. Soon, a team of police left for Vellore. Investigation led police to Mettur, where police kept an eye on the movement of a carpenter, Dillu, one of the accused. He was arrested on Thursday night at the house of his friend, Nagaraj, who was also allegedly involved in the offence, according to police.

Dillu's interrogation and information from the Tamil Nadu police helped Arif Ali, Koramangala Police Inspector, and his team to arrest another accused, Fiaz, a fruit vendor from Bommanahalli, in the early hours of Friday.

"The credit for solving the case should go to the team work of the police," S. Mariswamy, Police Commissioner of Bangalore, says. "This is one of the fruits of a new strategy by which a coordinated effort is made to solve cases."

The other accused in the case will be arrested soon, he adds.
