Noted artist Hadpad passes away

BANGALORE Nov. 23. The well-known painter and art teacher, R.M. Hadpad, died at a private hospital here early today after a brief illness. He was 67. Mr. Hadpad is survived by wife, three sons, and a daughter.

Known for simplicity, Mr. Hadpad's Ken School of Art had emerged as an important cultural centre of Bangalore. It had emerged as a learning centre for thousands of students interested in drawing and painting. Students, who could not afford to pay fees, were also welcome to the school.

The school, which was started in 1968, is credited to have produced a large number of artists of repute.

Mr. Hadpad, who was born in Badami in 1936, was President of the Karnataka Lalita Kala Academy. He was also a member of the Senate of Kannada University, Hampi. He had won many awards, including the Varnashilpi Venkatappa Award, Rajyotsava Award, and those given by art organisations and academies.

Mr. Hadpad, who attended scores of lecture-cum-demonstrations for the benefit of people, never lost an opportunity to promote the cause of the art. He always said that "every artist has the responsibility to safeguard art from becoming stagnant".

The noted writer, C.G. Krishnaswamy, said Mr. Hadpad had proved that an art school could make a rich contribution without a posh outlook.

B.T. Munirajaiah, Registrar, Lalitkala Academy, said Mr. Hadpad was never after money. A more committed artist was rare to come by, he observed. Mr. Hadpad was suffering from asthma for the past few months. He had been discharged from hospital recently, but had to be admitted there again.
